Area codes: frequently asked questions

What is an area code?

An area code is the first three digits of a ten-digit phone number in the North American Numbering Plan. It identifies the geographic area where the number was first issued, such as 212 for New York City or 416 for Toronto.

How many area codes are there in the US and Canada?

This directory lists 441 geographic area codes: 359 in the United States, 55 in Canada and 27 in the Caribbean and Pacific countries and territories that share the +1 country code.

Which area codes are toll-free?

The toll-free codes are 800, 833, 844, 855, 866, 877 and 888. They are not tied to a place, and calling them is free for the caller. The 900 code is premium-rate. None of these is listed here because none points to a location.

What is an overlay area code?

An overlay adds a new area code to the same geographic area as an existing one, so one place has two or more codes. Everyone in an overlaid area must dial all ten digits, even for a local call.

Can I tell where someone is from their area code?

Only where their number was first issued. People keep their numbers when they move, mobile numbers work anywhere, and callers can disguise the number they call from, so an area code is not a reliable sign of where a caller is.
