Country calling codes: frequently asked questions
What is a country calling code?
A country calling code is the one-to-three-digit number you dial after the international access code (or the + sign) to reach a number in another country: +1 for the United States and Canada, +44 for the United Kingdom, +91 for India. The International Telecommunication Union assigns them.
How do I find the country code of a phone number?
Look at the digits right after the + sign, or after the 00 or 011 at the start. The first one to three digits are the country code. Or paste the whole number into the free phone number lookup and it reads the country for you.
Why do some countries share a calling code?
A few codes cover several countries. +1 is the North American Numbering Plan, shared by the United States, Canada and many Caribbean and Pacific countries; +7 is Russia and Kazakhstan; +44 is the United Kingdom and the Crown dependencies. The digits after the code tell them apart.
Can a country code start with 0, or be inside another?
No. No country code begins with 0, and no code is the beginning of another, so any number can be read from left to right without ambiguity. That is why codes come in different lengths.
How many country calling codes are there?
This directory covers 245 countries and territories. Several share a code, so there are fewer distinct codes than countries.
